Ankylosing-SpondylitisWhat is Ankylosing Spondylitis?

Tony Snow has rightly said, “the secret of learning to be sick is this: Illness doesn’t make you less of what you were. You are still you.” This is very true for patients who suffer from the illness of Ankylosing Spondylitis.

What is Ankylosing Spondylitis?

Ankylosing Spondylitis is a long term disease in which there is a progressive stiffening of the joints, with special affinity for joints of the head and trunk especially the joints between the spine and the hip bone (called the sacro-iliac joint or SI joint).

What is the cause for Ankylosing Spondylitis?

The exact cause of Ankylosing Spondylitis is unknown. A strong association has been found between a genetic marker HLA-B27 and this disease. While the incidence of HLA-B27 is less than 1 percent in the general population, it is present in more than 85 percent of patients with AS.

Ankylosing spondylitis is a type of arthritis affecting young adults, more common in males than females (male: female=10:1).

How does Ankylosing Spondylitis affect the body?

The SI joints are usually the first to get involved, followed by the spine from lower back upwards. The hip, the knee and the mid-chest joints are also involved frequently. Erosion of the joint is followed by pain and later stiffness (even after pain subsides) which can be permanent most of the times.

Can Ankylosing Spondylitis affect the rest of the body too?

Ankylosing spondylitis can also affect the eyes, heart, lungs, and occasionally the kidneys.
Over time, long standing inflammation of the spine, i.e. spondylitis can lead to a complete fusion of the spinal bones, a process referred to as ‘ankylosis’.
