               A case of Cerebellar Ataxia

This is the case of Baby C.G (Patient Ref. No. L-4110), a 4 years old female child who had been under our care since infancy for complaints of recurrent colds and delayed milestones. One day she was brought to the clinic for complaints of staggering gait and slurred speech since the past 10 days. The parents reported that she had developed viral fever about 10 days back, for which they had taken her to the pediatrician. During this period she developed difficulty in walking whereby she had a staggering gait. Her speech had also become slurred and she had become very weak.

Her pediatrician diagnosed the condition as cerebellar ataxia that had developed after the viral infection. She had been admitted to the hospital for the treatment of the same and the pediatrician had put her on steroids for control of the symptoms.

Her appetite was normal although it had markedly increased after being put on steroids. She had marked desire for sweets. She would sweat more around the head. Her milestones were delayed slightly and she had calcium deficiency as an infant. She had bow legs and flat foot when she was about 7-8 months old. Her complaints of frequent colds had significantly improved with homoeopathic treatment in the past.

For the cerebellar ataxia, she was put on homoeopathic treatment along with the conventional treatment as prescribed by her pediatrician. She was given a remedy named Argentum Nitricum alongwith Gelsemium. She improved very well with the treatment and the steroids could gradually be reduced to the minimum dosage. Her gait improved very well and the slurring of her speech was much better now. She did not have weakness any longer. Overall she did very well with the homoeopathic treatment and within 3 months of treatment she was almost back to normal.

Remark: The remedy prescribed in this case is patient-specific i.e. it has been prescribed based on the symptoms specific to the patient at that point of time. It is advisable that the patient does not indulge in any self-medication.
