Can Hepatitis C be treated with homeopathy?
Dear Dr Shah,
Can Hepatitis C be treated with homeopathy? Is there any evidence of such treatment? I have heard homeopathy cannot treat infection. Is it true?
Before answering this question, we need to understand what is Hepatitis C. Well, Hep C is a chronic, serious infection caused by some virus (named as Hep C virus, genotypes I, II, III, IV, V, VI and some subtypes) which may enter human body through sources such as blood transfusion, dialysis, infected syringes, tattooing, etc. The virus may infect primarily the Liver and then more organs in the body over time.
It must also be noted that this virus takes over 15 to 25 years to produce symptoms; till that time, the virus remains silent. It produces chronic inflammation of the liver (hepatitis) and subsequently scar formation (cirrhosis) and in some cases, it may produce cancer of liver.
After this introduction, let us know about the possibility of homeopathic treatment. Let us also make a note that the conventional treatment for Hep C at this point is not satisfactory, due to the reasons that its success rate is less than 55%, it has side effects and there are many adverse effects. Also, the infection is likely to relapse after the treatment.
Lets talk a bit about homeopathy. Homeopathy is over 200 years old science which have proven record to treat many chronic diseases including many forms of infections. Hep C is one such infection.
Most homeopaths have little experience with Hep C treatment. However, at Life Force we have treated and documented over 350 cases of Hepatitis C. Also, we have conducted some research and a clinical trial with Hep C patients which have indicated that homeopathy has a definite role to play in the treatment of Hep C. It cannot be claimed to cure it but some reduction in the viral found is possible in many cases of Hep C.
A clinical trail with 30 patients of Hep C treated at Life Force has demonstrated that the responding group had significant virus count reduction after three and six months of homeopathic treatment. This calls for further research and exploration. At this point, based on the said experience, I would like to say that homeopathy option must be explored for Hepatitis C treatment.
