This filtering system is a bunch of blood vessels called the glomerulus. This leakiness leads to the presence of high levels of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Protein\">protein<\/a>\u00a0passing from the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Blood\">blood<\/a>\u00a0into the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Urine\">urine<\/a>\u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Proteinuria\">proteinuria<\/a>\u00a0at least 3.5\u00a0grams per day). Consequently, there are low levels of proteins in the blood (<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hypoproteinemia\">hypoproteinemia<\/a>),\u00a0fluid collection and swelling in different body cavities.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What are the Nephrotic Syndrome Symptoms?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>1) The most common sign is\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Excess_fluid\">excess fluid<\/a>\u00a0in the body. The proteins in the blood normally help to keep the fluid in blood from seeping out into body cavities. A deficiency of proteins in the blood in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.askdrshah.com\/app\/nephrotic-syndrome\/nephrotic-syndrome.aspx\">Nephrotic Syndrome<\/a> causes an accumulation of fluid in various body cavities, namely:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Puffiness around the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Human_eyes\">eyes<\/a>, especially in the morning.<\/li>\n<li>A swollen face is most commonly noticed first in children, while adults usually have swelling of their feet.<\/li>\n<li>Fluid in the\u00a0space around the lungs, called\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pleural_effusion\">pleural effusion<\/a>. This causes breathing difficulty, chest pain, cough etc.<\/li>\n<li>Fluid in the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peritoneal_cavity\">abdominal cavity<\/a>\u00a0called\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ascites\">ascites<\/a>, which causes a fullness and swelling in the abdomen.<\/li>\n<li>Generalized swelling throughout the body known as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anasarca\">anasarca<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>2)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Some patients may notice foam or froth in their\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Urine\">urine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>3)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Sometimes, nephrotic syndrome may be detected only after a complication like a clot in the blood has formed. This clot may either be in the blood vessel of the leg or may migrate to the lungs. If the clot is formed in the blood vessel of the leg (called deep vein thrombosis), one may experience swelling and pain in the legs.
