Cold sores and pimples are two completely different skin conditions which can start off looking very similar. But they feel very different and change in appearance as they develop.<\/p>\n

Cold Sores or Pimples \u2013 What are they?<\/h2>\n

A Cold sore<\/strong> is a viral infection, usually caused by herpes<\/a> simplex virus. It is very common; almost about 50-80% population have the virus, although it doesn\u2019t always cause breakouts.<\/p>\n

Pimples<\/strong> or acne,<\/strong> on the other hand, develop when there are blocked pores on the skin and hormonal changes occur. Bacteria (called \u2018propioni acnes\u2019) invade, and a painful bump is formed.<\/p>\n

Cold Sore or Pimple \u2013 What does it look like?<\/h2>\n
    \n
  1. Cold sores<\/strong> look like a cluster of tiny blisters typically appearing around your mouth and lips, sometimes inside the mouth, nose and chin.<\/li>\n
  2. Pimples<\/strong>, in contrast, are red in color and will grow anywhere that hair follicles are present. Hence, they cannot appear directly on the lips. So if you have a bump on the lips, it is most likely a cold sore.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Cold Sore v\/s Pimple \u2013 How do they develop?<\/h2>\n

    In the days or hours before a cold sore<\/strong> appears, you feel an itchy tingly sensation under the skin where it will eventually break up. This tingly feeling is a clear sign that you have a cold sore and not a pimple<\/a>.<\/p>\n

    Eventually, a cold sore will burst, ooze fluid, will scab over, crack and ooze, and slowly heal over in the next 10 days or so.<\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    Pimples<\/strong> or acne begin as a tender spot, or they just appear. You might feel a small tender bump before you actually see a pimple. (Often, a pimple just gives you a surprise; you go to sleep one night and wake up with a big gift on your skin! <\/em>)<\/p>\n

    Instead of clusters of blisters, a pimple develops a white head. Most pimples have just one each, but there can be massive bumps that have developed several heads. They don\u2019t look like blisters though.<\/p>\n

    Cold Sores and Pimples \u2013 Do they spread?<\/h2>\n

    The virus that causes cold sores<\/strong> is highly contagious. The virus can be transferred by kissing someone with the cold sore or sharing items like utensils, towels, handkerchiefs and make up.<\/p>\n

    Acne<\/strong> is not contagious, unlike cold sores. You can hug, kiss, share make up, with someone with pimples, and still never get them.<\/p>\n

    Do not mess with either though! <\/em>Avoid trying to pluck out either a pimple or a cold sore. A cold sore can spread to other people, while a pimple, though, not transferrable, can still form a scar if you try to pluck it out.<\/p>\n

    Treatment for Pimples and Cold Sores<\/h2>\n
